Problem with Media Player in Windows XP

09/06/2008 1:24 AM

Dear Freinds

I faced a problem in my home Desktop PC (933 MHz, 256Mb Ram & 80GB HD) which had windows XP. Windows was creating some problem and I had to install new windows XP. Before re-installing the Windows XP, there were some movies (old) which played with Windows media player successfully. But after re-installing the windows XP, these movie files played in Media Player without video. I could listen only voice in movies. While if I run other movie file (downloading from my Mobile phone), it plays correctly. I could not understand what happened with my old movie files. Can any of my friends help me out?

It seems you have not installed video codecs.

That's absolutely correct! And the easiest way to get the necessary codecs is to install a player that brings them along. Here are four very good ones, all available as free downloads:

Windows Media Player

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx

QuickTime

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

RealPlayer

VLC

Your problem stems from the fact that you should have backed up your media before reinstalling windows.

The original windows install is still on the drive if you didn't reformat during the process. But the media files may have been corrupted by the reinstalling. The good news is you won't forget to make back-ups again and any media you had might still be available.

I just googled it for you and found this link :

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ace_mega_codecs_pack.htm

Try www.google.com next time you are looking for something.

Dear Friend,

I downloaded the software and installed in my PC but unfortunately, my (OLD) video files (which were playing correctly before installation XP) did not play.

Any help??

Signode-

Hello, my name is Cody, and I am working with the Windows Media Outreach Team to help answer questions that users might have about their copies of Windows Media Player.

I see that you are having issues with seeing the video on many of your movies. Other commenters have been on the correct track: your issue seems to be one involving improper or missing codecs. I wanted to share an excellent resource to better inform yourself and take the steps needed to resolve the problem: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx

This site will provide not only basic information about the nature of codecs, but also how to properly obtain and install them.

I hope this link was helpful, please let me know if I can help in any other way!

Thanks,

Cody

I am experiencing a similar problem. My newly installed dvd r/w drive will not operate because it says "NET3.Frameware " not installed. I checked my machine and it only has NET1. I don't know if this is close to your problem or not, but it might be a place to look. Cliff Register
