Ensuring the Durability of Weld Joints

09/07/2008 2:02 AM

Hello,

We are in process of changing around 3 meter section of kiln shell. Incidentlly the position requires welding the section at old weld joint by cutting from center. (offsetting joint from existing weld portion is not possible). We have to use E-7018 electrode with proper welding procedure (rebaking and preheating electrode)

SINCE NEW WELD FALLS OVER OLD WELD, DURABILITY OF JOINT IS IN DOUBT. CAN ANY BODY SUGGEST PRECAUTION TO BE TAKEN DURING WELDING OR POST WELDING, TO ENSURE DURABILITY OF WELD UNDER HIGH TEMPERATURE (400 degree celsius)???

The proper way of doing your proposed maintenence work is to remove the old welds and fabricate a kiln segment to suit the required lenth. cutting old welds at center is not advisable because rewelding may result in lack of fusion and lapping welds.

Thank lgalvezcorporation for the suggessation. The method suggested is the best applicable. However we dont have any option but to install the shell section at mid weld section. I request you to please suggest an option in existing situation, to ensure durability.

Thanking you,

Shailesh

If that is the case I suggest that you put a backing plate outside of the joint. seal weld the backing plate all around.

in my opinion you've to follow the WPS and then perform all the NDT necessary to be sure of the integrity and quality of your weld.

Hello,

the main difference between the weld and the base metal is that the weld is cast structure as opposed to wrought. You should remove as much as possible of the old weld or make sure that you melt it again with the new process.
