"best" wicking/capillary material?

i am trying to find the best (fastest/max height- no evaporation pull) material to use on a vertical/shaft/rope h2o "wicking" device that sets on a resivor. i have been thinking of hydro gel "ice" crystals placed in a tube/shaft. thanks for the help,

Heritage railway locomotives use Worsted wool as a wick for lubricating oil. Other wools just don't do well enough.
