You can have NO + 1/2, NO + 3/4, NO + 9/16 and so on. Or, did you mean NO + 1/2 O2??? Look in a decent inorganic chem textbook. N2 + O2 do not readily react at 25 C (to form nitric oxide), because the equil constant for the Rx is ~ 4.5 x 10 exp (-31) !!!! However, in an internal combustion engire, the temperature is high enough, with some pressure, to produce NO, which is an endothermic Rx, and which is a major component of air pollution.

thanks cardio07. sorry that i missed O2. the reaction is NO+(1/2)O2→NO2. it would have been more useful to me if u have discussed about the above reaction. please tell me whether NO would combine with oxygen to give nitrogen di oxide under normal temp and pressure. if so, what is the rate of the reaction without catalyst. again thanks for the reply
