Any dry plant material, in fine particles and mixed with air, can be ignited.

Google "dust explosion" for some information on the mechanics involved. It's really a very interesting principle and has even been weaponized. A Georgia sugar mill found out the hard way earlier this year how devastating a dust explosion can be.

Explosions of dust is a common problem is any industry. A fine dust is created as the dried grain is harvested. The dust being from organic matter from the plant is very combustable.

Is the post looking for wheat dust explosions or is the question heading towards "puffed wheat" where the grain seems to "explode" in processing.

Wheat dust explosions are already dealt with by the previous posts.

My understanding is that "puffed" wheat is the outcome similar to popcorn where the starch is heated beyond a critical temperature and converts to an alternate carbohydrate. (There is also some effect caused by the small amounts of water present turning into steam.) These reactions happen with rapid and violent outcomes causing the quite artistic shapes that we come to love.
