LHC Super Collider - End of the World or New Era in Science?

09/10/2008 3:58 PM

There is a paragraph written by Nostradamus going around that is being presented as evidence that the LHC super collider is going to bring the end of the world (or at least mess it up a lot). Century 9 Quatrain 44 reads:

Leave, leave Geneva every last one of you,
Saturn will be converted from gold to iron,
Raypoz will exterminate all who oppose him,
Before the coming the sky will show signs.

Now those of you that knows me knows that I don't think the LHC will destroy the world. In fact I'm very excited at the prospect of science finally finding the Higgs Boson. Still, I've been wrong enough times before to at least be willing to entertain the notion that the world might end. Lets take a look at the paragraph above.

First, a little background on Nostradamus check this link.

So the first line is telling us to leave Geneva. As can be seen in this map, the LHC is close to Geneva:

The next line mentions Saturn will be converted from gold to iron. Saturn, the ringed planet, or Saturn, the titan? I'm going with ringed planet and I'm going to say this is a way of describing the giant ring of the particle accelerator. The LHC will be accelerating and colliding lead, which I sometimes confuse with Iron, could this be what Nostradamus did?

The third sentence is intriguing in the use of the phrase Raypoz which suggests a ray of positrons or perhaps Raymond Pozo a dominican republic singer who according to Nostrodamus, will destroy anything that opposes him.

Finally he speaks of signs in the sky. These are always bad, especially comets and eclipses, but I don't know if there have been any of these in Geneva lately, if there have been, please let me know.

The good news is that Nostradamus seems only concerned with the region around CERN which means those of us watching form the sidelines are probably safe, for now.

I for one am concerned that the LHC will create black holes that I will get sucked into. Fortunately I have this handy dandy guide telling me what will happen when I do! Sure sounds like fun!

I've always been suspicious of that guy from Nova, nobody is that cheerful about science all the time.

I think the real problem will come later. Most particle guys are pretty certain that any black holes will be small and will quickly evaporate. Sounds OK, but...

What happens to all that black hole vapor? Initially it may just disperse in the wind, being sufficiently diluted to cause no trouble save for the occasional unlucky sparrow who is suddenly crushed out of the sky. But, as time goes by, swirls and eddys of this vapor will collect like fog, perhaps in someplace near like Grenoble, pehaps far away in Canberra.

And, one chill day, as the black hole relative humidity crosses 100%, there will be rain, yes rain, of black holes. Houses, cars, whole rowing teams will disappear, perhaps to reappear the far side of star P137, perhaps to be only cosmic spittle. Puddles will form and city blocks will fall into them, leaving only larger puddles.

All this was foretold, in literary code, in the cult movie The Blob which debuted fifty years ago.

Here is what Nostradamus wrote before and after the quote you gave. They are so random and out of date. You can derive whatever meaning you want out of them. hope people don't worry to much about dooms day crap.

42

From Barcelona, from Genoa and Venice,
From Sicily pestilence Monaco joined:
They will take their aim against the Barbarian fleet,
Barbarian driven 'way back as far as Tunis.

43

On the point of landing the Crusader army
Will be ambushed by the Ishmaelites,
Struck from all sides by the ship Impetuosity,
Rapidly attacked by ten elite galleys.

44

Leave, leave Geneva every last one of you,
Saturn will be converted from gold to iron,
'Raypoz' will exterminate all who oppose him,
Before the coming the sky will show signs.

45

None will remain to ask,
Great 'Mendosus' will obtian his dominion:
Far from the court he will cause to be countermanded
Piedmont, Picardy, Paris, Tuscany the worst.

His words are essentially as he says, "mendosus'(used above) which is faulty, or full of faults

Here is one for ya,
38
The elder royal one on a frisky horse
will spur so fiercely that it will bolt.
Mouth, mouthfull, foot complaining in the embrace;
dragged, pulled, to die horribly

Which means,
They aren't giraffes, they are just horses, Chuck Norris hit with an uppercut!
(dragged pulled) (Frisky horse) (royal one) (spur so fiercely) (mouthfull)

P.S. sorry for the randomness. I like to keep a positive outlook on life.

By the way Nostradamus uses "geneva" alot.

The people of "Geneva" drying up with hunger, with thirst,
Hope at hand will come to fail:
On the point of trembling will be the law of him of the Cevennes,
Fleet at the great port cannot be received

The shore of Lake Garda to Lake Fucino,
Taken from the Lake of "Geneva" to the port of 'L'Orguion':
Born with three arms the predicted warlike image,
Through three crowns to the great Endymio

The chief of the army in the middle of the crowd
Will be wounded by an arrow shot in the thighs,
When "Geneva" in tears and distress
Will be betrayed by Lausanne and the Swiss.

"Geneva" and Langres through
those of Chartres and DÂle
And through Grenoble captive at Mont¸limar
Seyssel, Lausanne, through fraudulent deceit,
They will betray them for sixty marks of gold.

hmmmm.....all very good points. I see I'm going to have to throw logic to the winds if I want to continue with this "end of the world" scenario. I think I can do it.
