09/10/2008 3:32 PM

i have direct tv and one of my receiver boxes keeps trying to say there are no chanels available i can change the channel etc. but it has the this channel is not purchased in the little blue box on the corner when its set to a channel i know i have purchased. The guides list of channels are blank also.

a repair man can come out to fix and/or replace it but that wont be untill the third of next month

so my question.....does anyone know a way i can fix my problem myself?

Have you tried unplugging the power supply for about 15 min?

Also, make sure the little credit-card thingy is firmly seated in it's slot (if you have one).

Oh have I gone down this road before.

That repairman will cost you $70 no mater what the cause of the problem. Direct TV owns the equipment but they will not repair it for free.

I have a problem with that, let's say you did nothing wrong. Your box is fried for some reason, why should you pay for it, it's not even yours? But Direct TV has no intrest in being right, just getting paid to have someone fix their problem.

Try unpluging as listed above, if it fixes the problem, call Direct TV and cancel that repair man or your be charged on your next bill $70 for nothing. As a matter of fact, your going to be charged for the call regardless if the problem was yours or not.

Well its still under warrenty so they wont charge us

The reason im looking for a fix is because i get forced to watch soap opera's and and sports shows. Neither of which i enjoy.

But i have tried unplugging it and i get the same.

Any other methods out there?

Why not just call 1-800-directv? If you are getting a signal, and you must be to be getting the message you're getting, they should be able to tell you why it says you have not purchased the channel. They will want the card number (access card), and the receiver number (a label on the receiver somewhere). I just realized you may have already gone down this road, and they told you there was an equipment problem, thus the service call?

the box is in my grandfathers room and hurricane gustav just came through here after getting electricity back my grandfather called direct tv without telling me. he also insists the roof leaked on it.

but no every time i call direct tv about a problem they want to send a guy out here no matter how simple the problem.

For me it was easy. I called the guys and a girl, very young by the voice, told me what to do:

When you dial (press the keypad) a channel number, in most of the cases it will go to that channel. But now, many channels are in high definition and have the same number with the regular ones. The channel where you go when you dial a number is a HD, and if you do not have HD, you get that message that you haven't purchased that channel.

So, go to the menu, that one that shows you the channels, and their content, choose the one that you like, and be careful to select the non high definition one.
