DC Contactor / FGC Relay 10A inductive

09/11/2008 5:39 AM

Has anyone out there come across a (reasonably priced and sized) contactor or forced-guided-contact relay (min. requirement 1NO + 1NC), 24VDC coil, capable of switching a 24VDC 10A inductive load (DC-3, min. 106 operations)? The NC contacts could be low-current (for monitoring).

Most contactors, even those rated at ~100A 240VAC, come down to 5A @ 24VDC.

The app. is to kill the power to motor drives in a Safety related control system. I know that DC motor contactors are available, but the ones I've seen have been big and expensive.

Thanks in anticipation.

How about an automotive (as in truck) or heavy equipment (as in bulldozer) contactor? The ones used for starters have to switch high DC inductive loads. A separate NC relay can be used for sensing.

Damn good idea re. the load switching - a good cheap & reliable solution.

Trouble is, in a safety system, the NC (monitoring) contacts have to be mechanically linked to the NO (control) contacts, as in a contactor or FGC relay. This is to make sure that if the control contacts weld, the monitoring contacts stay open when the coil is de-energized. The monitoring system detects this state, & locks out to safety.

Thanks anyway, Bill - keep the suggestions coming!

O. K. How about this R51 job from NTE . . . Has rating of 50 A @ 14 V, so it should be able to handle 10 A @ 24 V. There's also a R54 rated at 30 A @ 28 VDC. See this page.

Thanks again, Bill, but I still need the mechanically-linked auxiliary contacts for monitoring (R51 job from NTE is a single-pole thing, SPST or SPDT).

One of the R51 series has SPDT contacts.

You may want to talk to www.gigavac.com who have a GX11 contactor for about $125 that migh do the job. It's a SPST main contacts with SPDT auxillary contacts.

Thanks, Guest, I'll give the UK distributors a call in the morning. Could be onto something.

hi John,

Have you tried Albrights?

we use them for 24Vdc motor control on anything > 10A

Tel: +44 (0) 208 390 5357
Fax: +44 (0) 208 390 1927

Sales Email:sales@albright.co.uk
Technical Email: technical@albright.co.uk
