05/17/2005 11:30 AM

MTU Aero Engines has restructured its maintenance processes to include production methods that improve material flow. The result? Shortened process times and on-time delivery of repaired engines. Could these material flow methods work for your company?

Timing is everything...

Just in time deliveries of materials and streamline material flows are great practices if you have reliable suppliers and live in a place where the weather allows for consistent usage. I worked for once place where inclement weather meant that we couldn't get our supplies for a few days because they only came out to our neck of the woods on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

That's a great point. A company that repairs jet engines is, in all likelihood, located at or very near a major airport.

In the words of a great engineer, Scotty of Star Trek, "The more complicated the system the easier it is to gum up the works."
We seem to be adding complexity to save time and cost and hoping that the mechinisms that suport it don't break down.
