conversion of 60Hz generator to 50Hz

09/15/2008 9:31 AM

My supplier is trying to convert a 60Hz gas engine generator to 50Hz.

Before I ask him to go ahead I want to know the implication on the gen set performance/efficiency, ability of these engines to run in parallel and frequency tolerance.

Most of us think of an engine as that thing that burns the gas. The generator is just a motor (of a specific type) that runs at some designed RPM when operated on 60 Hz power (when power is going into the motor) or produces some voltage out at 60 Hz for a given RPM when power is coming out, as in a generator.

If the gas engine is driving a 50 Hz motor (of the same type) at its rated RPM then all should be well or about the same. I can't imagine, however, what you mean by running engines in parallel.......(or motors in parallel, either)
