Horse Power Calculator for Spade Drill

09/16/2008 1:05 PM

How do I calculate Horse Power requirements for Spade Drills?

I'm drilling a 3" diameter hole in 3" thick A36 and want to ensure my machining center is up to the task.

From the McGraw-Hill Machining and Metalworking Handbook 3rd Edition -

APPROXIMATION:

Chp = P(F)(N){πD2/4}

Tp = 148,500(P)(F)(D)

Mhp = Chp/e

F = fm/N

Where:

Chp = horsepower at the cutter

Mhp = required motor horsepower

Tp = thrust for spade drilling, pounds force

D = drill diameter, in

F = feed, ipr (in your case use 0.022)

P = power factor constant (in your case use 0.75 or 1.0 with dull tools)

fm = feed, ipm

N = spindle speed, rpm

e = drive motor efficiency factor (0.90 for direct belt drive to the spindle; 0.80 for geared head drive to the spindle)

Quick check of understanding:

In the formula does the small "n" represent nominal diameter?

Ask the vendor or contact the manufacturer of the cutting tool. They should be able to send you a spec sheet of recommended RPM's and required power ratings. Typically these sheets will cover several types of materials. Pick the one closest to what you will be machining as a starting point.

Just a thought to consider.....

I recently had a problem with hp required to run a spade drill with an old MAS radial arm drill. The clutch was wearing out and we couldn't get replacement parts from the other side of the pond for weeks and needed to make holes. The drill would slow down to the point that the operator would back off the feed to reduce the hp requirement.

I asked a local tool supplier for recommendations and he provided an annular cutter that I could run tests with.

The annular cutter could cut 4 times faster with less hp requirement! The clutch did not slip, we got our production in time, the hole quality was comparable.

If you do a google search for annular cutters I'm sure you will find a local supplier that can guide you thru the process development.

Good Luck!
