Rice Hull/Husk Energy Economics

09/18/2008 2:45 AM

In the Philippines, Factories (having converted from Fossil Fuel to Biomass Alternative) now contract for continuous supply of "unprocessed" Rice Hull (RH) for use as overhead feedstock in Industrial Kilns. As Transport from far-away Source to Market is a big Cost Factor, would a swift in the supply from "unprocessed" RH to "carbonized" partially burnt RH (CRH) or Rice Hull "charcoal" Briquettes (RHCB) save on cost - on a per kilo basis? What is the BTU Differential between "Unprocessed" & "Carbonized" Rice Hull?

Have you looked at pelletizing equipment.

If the Savings Differential is significant, it could be worth looking into. How much would be the lowest budget for a pelletizing machine?

Please send me info on the pelletizing equipment for rice hulls. We are assisting a rice grower in Central America who has mountains of rice hulls we are attempting to use as an energy source.

01. Given the high demand for BBQ Charcoal Briquettes in the USA, I'm surprised to know that "Mountain of Rice Hull" is available in Central America. You might make good money with Charcoal Briquetting/Pelletizing Machines plentiful in this website - http://www.Alibaba.com.

02. Good Luck.

Good logical thinking... but the only flow i find in this after carbonising you will have a hard time in pelleting. You then will need an additional binder (1 or more) which process you may find costlier.

But still worth looking into...

One more surprise you may come across if you do proceed is that after carbonising CRH will have better and more profitable applications than as a fuel.

(mmm... I should have known when to keep my mouth shut!!)

I have an old book on building a 5HP Stirling Engine. It was designed for burning rice husks. It turned out that they 'flash burned' them, and really only burned the oil out of the husk. It was left 'carbonized', but still was sufficient amount left for either burning again or for animal feed.

This makes me think it could probably have oil extracted by crushing, and still have the celulose content to be able to burn or digest as a biofuel or for some other use.

Could try to thermally gasify the oils and extract them for diesel.

Good idea - if economically viable. Good Luck.
