Checking and PM of capacitor banks

09/22/2008 3:13 AM

Dear All,

What steps needs to be carried out during the preventive maintenance of capacitor banks? What should be the periodic difference at which the maintenance should be carried out?

What is the best way to check the various capacitors (three phase) connected in the bank are not weak.

Degradation or imbalance of the capacitors can be evaluated by tong testing the three phase leads, and based on the voltage you will be able to tell. When you have bad voltage fluctuations as we do in this part of africa then this should be done every week. Change out the Caps if they fall below 60%. If the caps are not powered up then disconnect the discharge resistors and measure the micro farrad, compare that with the rated Micro Farrad.
