Mechanical Vibrations affecting DAQ

09/22/2008 6:23 AM

I was running a test wherein i had a DAQ board accepting inputs from a torque transducer and a RPM sensor. Now earlier the whole setup was working fine except for the torque measurements which were all over the place due to a misaligned shaft.

Fixed that, and about a couple of weeks later, i had this problem of the rpm readings going haywire anytime the RPM reached above 2100 rpm.

For weeks we tried to figure out what was going wrong, sent the DAQ board out to be rechecked and all and then one of my colleagues just thought of lifting the box and found out the readings were way better for both and the RPM readings had no noise.

Apparently mechanical vibrations being transmitted from the motor to the table and then to the box which just screwed with everything.

Now we have a pillow below the box

Any inputs?

Are there any mechanical relays in there (e.g. reed relays for input selection/multiplexing)?

If not, all I can think of is a duff contact somewhere - bad solder joint or plug/socket connection.

Nope no mechanical relays in the circuit.

Checked all the wirings, nothing wrong. We probably resoldered connections a 100 times. I couldnt believe it when buddy said lifting it did the trick.

Yup..it happens..I once had a little hybrid amplifier board in a hand held bit of kit, if you squeezed or twisted the unit it went loopy. The printed resistors on the amp acted like mini strain gauges.

I made a little jig which put a Z bend in the legs of the amplifier board. Problem solved...I used the analogy of standing up in and undergound train, if you flex your knees you can stay balanced.

I'm afraid this problem will knock in at your door again. You said that once you installed your DAQ board all went ok then problem with torque measurings and some time pass with revolution. It's worst case due to its ambiguity.

I had similar problem with ADC boards which my lab had ordered at local factory. I checked them by slight kicking during measuring. There was a problem with quartz resonators for ADC and uProc. We should either replace quartz or resolder its properly placing beneath rubber shim.

Hope I'm wrong and pillow is enough.

Either kicking slightly. Correct me master Del.

Nontheless, I so happy to bring you some amusement with my English. But it's true. I was learnt this method by my teacher at the time I was a student. Have you recollected Armagedon movie? Episode on Russian Space station? Same same!

Slight kicking is fine..it's just the concept of a calibrated kick which made me smile...I knew what you meant

Ok, it's rare case when I was correct with my lang.

To continue ours conversation: Punching its down with pateinet observation:"How they[boards] are?" , is not a too bad idea too.
