Best Metal Hubs for Wheels

09/22/2008 11:45 AM

HI,

I'd like to know your advices about the strenght of steel/alloy material.I'm on the way to have my four hubs CNC matchined (I'm restoring a car) and I don't know which is the best material for the job.Iwas thinking to use 304 SS but someone told me that it's not so strong for the job, so I was looking for Ergal but reading the specifications sheet I've found that the SS has more than double resistance...

So, does anyone know which is the best and strong material for my hubs?

I don't want to see any sign of corrosion/oxidation for a long time...

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

Giorgio

Are you leaving them unpainted? If so Use a high strength steel, and have them chrome plated. They could be polished first, or just plated over the machine work as it is. If you are going to add color to them, I would suggest cadmium plating first. That way if the paint chips when attaching the wheels are attached, there will be no corrosion under the wheels. Good luck.

be careful of hydrogen embrittlement, if electroplating.

also be aware that the higher strength steels are more notch sensitive.

HI, thanks for your answers even if not specific to material..So, the restoration,

I have bought a Lotus Esprit S2.2 1981 in UK and I'm doing a nut&bolt restoration.

Every part must be new or renoveted where it's possible, the rear hubs are not available and the front are very expensive...but I can have these parts machined free...so I need only to choose the best material.

If someone is interested I have loaded my restoration photos at:

Many thanks for your attention.

I don't want to see any sign of corrosion/oxidation for a long time...

What environmental factors are involved, is a corrosive environment; will the vehicle be on an island in an ocean, etc??

521 SS is a great material spec

Hi Bwire,

thanks for your advice.

....island in an ocean...?? uhmmm no, it's only the road salt that are frequently used in my country in the winter...so seeing that I'm doing a little masterwork I want a rust proof material.

I'm a little maniac...I know, but I will see regarding the 521 SS.

Thanks

Giorgio

Okay great 521 is a specific grade and used when fatigue is and issue you may not find it easily.

A 17-4 is readily available and may service you well if a very brilliant finish were specified about 10 micron.

A mild vinegar and water mix sprayed on followed by a soft water rinse is a good corrosion prevention

Vinegar and water? Where can I find a vineger and water solution? Perhaps I should ask my wife?
