Hello mohd.imran,

In principle, there's no difference between Power cable and any other device or machine.

Type tests are those usually required by the corresponding standard to be performed just once per "type". It is like a qualification test made on a prototype.

FAT encompasses type tests (if any one is necessary) and routine tests which are made in each item or manufacturing lot, according to the equipment type and applicable standard.

For HV Power Cables you can check IEC 60840 which lists all tests required and classified as "routine tests", "sample tests" and "type tests".

Kind regards

Kwetz,

Never having worked in the discrete industry, I'll admit I haven't come across that definition of FAT. The definition of Factory Acceptance Test I am familiar with is a test performed on a new control system at the system integrator's site. This test is witnessed by the customer's personnel using the actual programs and equipment that will be installed. This allows the customer to feel confident that the system will perform as expected when installed on-site. All functions of the control system including normal operations, alarms, aborts, etc can be tested in a controlled environment. This test is followed after installation at the customer's facility by a Site Acceptance Test (SAT).

Hello andrew_ward,

I agree with your definition. I've seen it too but, at least in the fields I'm moving around FAT has a more general meaning. One common aspect to all is the customer witnessing, but it is not necessarily related to control systems or several integrated components which make a system. It can be just a component (a centrifugal pump, for example).

Kind regards

Being an I&C engineer for a power company, I have attended many a FAT tests on new machines control system as well as retrofits for older ones.

I have also been to FATs for gas compressor stations, large ( >100 MVA) generator step-up transformers etc.

Testing can be categories as

A. Type test ( Done on a particilar Model)

B. Routine Test ( done on every peice )

Then as

1. Factory Acceptance Test

2. Site Acceptance Test

Type tests are conducted in a prototype/ model, where rigorous testing of the model is done.Suitability of the model in the designed conditions are tested rigoursly. The life of the test sample may be affecetd due to rigoruos continous application of extreme & demanding test conditions.

Factory Acceptance test is conducted in every sample to be supplied ( which is meant for a particular order ) in the presence of customer representative. Generally FAT is a routine test but depends on the situations.

SAT will never have a Type test

Type test can also be one of the FAT if the model is not yet type tested. Else type test certificate from any reputed certified testing organisation is enough.

Further clarity in the matter will be well appreciated

Thanks in advance
