the USA coast as a reef / breakwater. The project
required the ship to be sunk upright, no mean feat!

More information is needed here, there is a possiblity of building cells offshore for a break water, typically sheet pile regardless of section will not stand vertical with out some sort of a whale or structural member. What type of seas do you anticipate, what is the frequency of the waves at the purposed break water?

I was involved in a mooring facility on an Island off the coast of California years ago, the difference of 20 seconds in swell frequency can make huge changes in structure, this is not a simple question.
