Reducing Carbon During Brazing

I am brazing steel and stainless steel fittings and manifolds for pressurized fluid conveyance.

Currently there is an issue with build-up of carbon. Particularly inside where it is difficult to apply flux. We must grit blast after which is very labour intensive.

Does anyone know of a way to prepare the components to eliminate the carbon build-up?

Yeah I've had that problem before.Tell me what are you using? Oxy-Acetylene?What type of steel?I know you said Stainless fittings,is the other cast iron?or a high carbon steel? Skipper

Are you trying to braze to quickly with very hot flame? if so you are probably overheating your joint. I assume you are silver brazing not bronze?which requires a much higher temperature.

45% silver solder is best for a low temperature but there will all ways be some discoloration,use a neutral flame to keep carbon deposits to aminimum and or use propane it is much cleaner.

You might consider flowing argon through the manifold and pipes during brazing to displace the air. That should eliminate the need for post-braze clean-up.

If all else fails two possibilities,

TIG (GTAW) or use a Hydrogen Oxygen torch system (spendy but might have cheaper total cost).
