Current Transducer

09/26/2008 10:35 AM

Hi,

I am trying to purchase a current transducer for the motors of some chillers we're bringing up online. The motors are 4160Vac, three phase

I believe I found one from a supplier from flex-core, speaking to him he told me when you snap on the split core current transducer on one leg of the motor it would not have to take in 4160V because the insulation jacket would shield most of the voltage from hitting the transducer. The transducer is only rated at 600Vac

Does this seem right to you? I just want to be sure

I have only been working for a year

A clamp on current transformer should never make contact with the metal conductor of the line you are monitoring. For a circuit with such a high supply voltage, it would seem to me that you want the output of the CT connected to its load before you attempt to make any connections. If you don't have the load connected, the open circuit CT output voltage could be deadly.

The CT will output some voltage proportional to a given current when it is connected to a monitoring device (or load). The best CT devices and technical help I've encountered came from the folks at http://www.pearsonelectronics.com/current-monitor-products/clamp-on-current-monitor.htm - sorry, link no longer available.

I take it that these are some huge motors. I'd like to see such a thing....but from a distance!

There is a risk when mixing low voltage transducers with high voltage supply. You might not save anything as far as cost but will expose yourself and your company to legal pursuits if something goes wrong.

There are medium voltage current transducers available that are approved for this job.

Play safe.
