At first, we have to define the specification (type & grade) of that carbon steel material. Suppose we have a carbon steel material with P-No. 1, Gr. Nos. 1, 2, 3:

According to ASME Code, Section VIII, Div. 1, Para. UCS-56 and Table UCS-56:

• Normal Heating Temp. : 1100 oF (595 oC)

• Rate of Heating : ≤ 400 oF / hr (222 oC) divided by thickness in inches

• Rate of Cooling : 500 oF / hr (280 oC) divided by thickness in inches

Heating time = (1100-70) oF /[(400 oF/hr) (40 mm/25 mm)] = 1.61 hr (1 hr & 40 minutes)

Min. Holding Time = 1 hr / inch (25 mm) = (1 hr / 25 mm)(40 mm) = 1.6 hr (1 hr & 40 minutes)

Cooling time = (1100-70) oF /[(500 oF/hr) (40 mm/25 mm)] = 1.29 hr(1 hr & 20 minutes)
