Wanted: Small, Low Output, Thermoelectric Generator

09/30/2008 3:17 PM

Many years ago, in Design for the Real World, there was a radio designed for 3rd world areas which consisted of a small radio circuit mounted on a tin can which had thermocouples mounted to provide power by burning materials in the can.

I am looking for a way to generate 3-5 volts at 20ma (to light an LED) from a heat source which is in the 500F range to a sink which is between 50-125F.

Material readily available in the product is Titanium.

Just a note to people out there: I did some experimenting with using a Peltier junction to generate electricity and found it to be a lot of trouble to produce only a little power. I do not think this problem necessarily applies to the application here, though.

There is a design in 'Popular mechanics' do it yourself encyclopedia. it requires two different types of wire and is powered by a candle

Thanks, the key search words were "candle radio thermoelectric."
