Stride6

10/01/2008 9:44 AM

I bought and installed a 333MHz 1GB RAM to upgrade the memory of my 4 year old laptop. It was booting okay, but soon after starting firefox or any video in either Windows or Ubuntu, it used to freeze. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics, and it consistently told me of Stride6 error, Cache on. Now does this mean that the RAM I bought is bad, and I should ask for a replacement, or are the settings or the RAM itself incompatible with my laptop in some way?

A bad RAM is a sick sheep indeed:

Back before I laptops ruled it was quite common to get RAM of different types. You should check the manufacturers Web page support and see what is the recomended type for your machine.

Then buy that type with no deviations. If you have already done that, send it back and get a new chip.

As i recall the configuration is also important. 1 gig might have to be 4 250 mb or 2 500 mb but 1 500 and 2 250 might not work. I remember this because one time I upgraded and had to throw away my old ram because of the size mismatch.

I have also seen the same problem and then wiggled the ram and it flicked. The connection was loose. But that was in a desk top. Could that happen in a laptop I do not know.
