Analog Switch for Video Signal Switching

09/29/2008 4:35 AM

Hi!!

I have a idea to switch between two vedio signal to single output by using an analog switch.

I am thinking to go for CD4016 as analog switch which can operate on 12V.

As far as i can think CD4016 will work to switch two 12V dc camera signals as single output.

Pls let me know any design idea which i shoud adopt for above concept.

Does i need any buffer technique at the output stage?

regards!

According to the TI data sheet, the CD4016B is a "CMOS Quad Bilateral Switch for transmission or multiplexing of analog or digital signals".

Since you plan to switch only two signals, this IC should work.

Please study the data sheet to see if this IC will suit your needs start with the function diagram.

Also review the electrical characteristic and response curves to see if they meet your needs. You will need to know what your modulated signals look like on a o-scope.

I used to have a book, "CMOS Cookbook" by Don Lancaster, where a video switcher or selector circuit is described. Amazon has it so just order a copy. It's a great book. I learned a lot from it.

Yup, great book. I'll look at it for the "switcher circuit" when I get home. I picked it up on Amazon for a very small amount. He has other books as well all good to have.

CD4016?? I didn't know they even made that creature any more... We used 4066 from the late 1970,s on.

I would look closely at power supply specs on the chip too. I have vague memory of them running at 10 volts max. If so, you might zap the chip with 12 volts. Also a 12v input signal might do the same thing: ZAP!! Keep your input signals within the power supply rails.

Regretfully my CMOS data books are in storage so I cannot look up details for you. I would recommend going to Texas Instruments or Freescale for current information on the 4000 series CMOS line... or search for "4000 series CMOS ICs".

Good luck

Bill

The data sheet and the part are both available from Mouser Electronics.

Many of these parts are still used by hobbiests and students.
