Polyurethane Microoganisms

10/05/2006 8:48 AM

A variety of goods we found are made of polyurthane, so i assume that i am widely exposured to this plastic. I must consider most of the problems were solved and some doubts are to be beyond the obligation and are not cleared to me.

stained wood, floor, car varnish, adhesive, shoe sole split fowering, freezer with bad smell (I saw the foam wet and stained)

What are micorganisms that feed from the polyurethane? Does it happen to the floor varnish? In our car?

Seriously? Check with Shell Labs, Bellaire, Texas. They are THE go-to folks on microbial bioremediation.

There are microorganisms, especially fungi which can break down urethanes. It is not as large a problem as in other polymers and can be contolled with added biocides. I worked at one time for a company that made elastomeric gaskets for sewer pipe use, they guaranteed them for 100 years, of course they were using mercury compounds for reaction catalysts which made for a very effective biocide indeed.
