Canoes, Technology, and History

05/18/2005 5:00 PM

Students at Lawrence Technological University are putting the finishing touches on a computer-designed canoe to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of the Monongahela at Pittsburgh. The fur canoe weighs 400 pounds, cost about $5,000 and is designed to carry 1,000 pounds of cargo.

This is a nice example of using technology to make history come alive.

Funny

It's funny to think that they needed all the high-tech tools, epoxy, CAD and fiberglass, to build an 18th century canoe. I wonder if it's not just a smidge overkill. I would be much more interested if these guys could rebuild an authentic canoe using just the tools the people at the time would have had.
