Chemical-Resistant Plumbers Putty

10/07/2008 11:25 AM

I work for a chemical company in maryland and we are cleaning up are lab.In doing so I notice that the sink drain is leaking. It seem that the chemical that we are testing is eating or disolving the plumbers putty out. Is their any chemical resistant plumbers putty out there being made. The suppliers I talk to say it is not made anymore. Thank you .

Try liquid teflon.

suggest you clean it off and replace it with clear silicone caulking.

It would probably be helpful if we knew what sort of chemicals the seal needs to be able to resist. You may have to forego putty and look to sealing the sink drain bowl with a gasket made of an appropriate elastomer like Viton or Silicone.

Please check to make sure that the chemical(s) going down the sink are "legal" to go down a sink. This may not be proper disposal.

My thoughts exactly! They probably aren't.

You can't really know what to use, or recomend any one sealant untill you know which chemicals it needs to be resistant to. If there are more than one type of chemical that also needs to be taken into consideration. Look up a chemical compatability chart for the chemical/s you are using, then select the proper sealant material based on the data. -But the bottom line is: Unless the sink is not actually attached to the grid (Only drains to on site storage tank/s) you should not be pouring these chemicals down the drain.

A chemical company in Maryland should have a water treatment procedure for used water from the lab, from process and from sanitary end uses.
