I grew up shooting long guns. When I first got married 19 years ago my wife and I took up handgun target shooting, then when the kiddos came along we both sat the handguns aside while the kiddoes were growing up. Just recently we got back into it, and the kids are now old enough to safely learn to shoot as well.
