Actuators in Sequence

10/10/2008 7:57 AM

Hi Everyone,

I am not electrically inclined, one might say I have an electrocuted thumb rather than a green thumb, so please excuse my lack of terminology and also keep this in mind in your answer.

Situation: 3 12VDC linear actuators connected to one toggle switch.

Desired Action: Push the switch in the open position and actuator 1 is activated. Two seconds later actuator #2 kicks in as well. Five Seconds later actuator #3 kicks in. All actuators continue to extend to their full extention (no problem there, they freewheel). I don't want intermittent operation of the switch to confuse this action.

Push the switch to close actuator #2 is activated for 2 seconds, after which actuators #1&#3 are activated and all actuators continue to their full retraction. Again, intermittent toggling of the switch should not confuse the motion.

Any creative ideas are welcomed.

The possibilities begin with a motorised rotary sequencer, a bit like the one to be found in older washing machines and available from any number of on-line outlets for a few £GBP, to individual relays and timers, which will be a bit more, to a small programmable logic controller.

So it depends upon the project budget, more than anything.

Hi PW,

thanks for the input. I am currently working with a single shot relay timer. One major issue is that Actuator #1 sees current for a split second, which puts things out of kilter. I have a programmable logic controller, and a motor controller. Budget is not so much a factor (within a few $100). My biggest problem seems to be my electrical illiteracy, which prevents me from accurrately communicating, hahah.

Thanks again.

If you've got a PLC and you (or someone you can call on) can program it, it should be straightforward. You'll need (minimum) one free input and 3 free outputs.

What make/model is the PLC? How much spare I/O is there?

Sorry? PLC? I/O? ROFL, remember I am electrically illiterate! I know how to hook up wires to my 12v drill battery and make things move. I can do a very basic program on the controller, it has a sort of ladder logic thing. It is a Crouzet Millenium 3.

Thanks

I've got the Millennium 3 software - I'll try to find time over the weekend to knock up a simulation. Which model is it?

Hi John,

I've got a CD12, and have been trying to write a basic program on it. Needless to say, being illiterate of the correct symbols or terminology has resulted in some amusing results. Your help will be vastly appreciated.

Paul
