Mating Thread for Grease Fitting with DIN 714121 Threads

10/10/2008 10:21 AM

I am using Alemite #2108 grease fitting. The data sheet calls out M6 x 1 pitch taper metric thread conforming to German standard DIN 714121

I can't find any reference to this thread in Machinerys Handbook (25th ed) and I know that sometimes tapers mate to straight threads.

Do I tap the mating part with a taper thread or a straight thread?

I do not have access to the DIN specificaton either.

If this is isolated to one particular piece of equipment and not the entire plant, why not simply tap the hole with a standard readily available size. Being careful not to contaminate the lubricant of course...

i'm doing this ugly thing today!

Just pulled out some straight thread M6 grease fittings; replaced w/ tapered thread fittings. (to go from in-line to 90° angled). The interference started when i was at a good assembly depth, & seemed to be within reasonable limits for the 'clocking' i needed to do. I'm sure you could get away with this in the odd case.

Grease fittings are cheap. Why not just buy some straight thread ones and throw the tapered ones out?

Normaly the female thread is straight and only the male thread is tapered.

Thank you all for your input. We had used straight threads in the mating piece in the past but no one here at work seems to know why.

I was hoping someone out there had access to the DIN 714121 to "get it in writing" that straight threads were acceptable.
