presentation help

10/11/2008 10:44 PM

evening everyone.

i need some help with a presentation. i am doing a presentation on the different types of education in different countries and i was wondering if i could get some input from people that are in the field that i am studying for. :)

i am curious as to what a typical syllabus for engineering in another country would consist of. I'm mainly interested in what the non-specific classes are that you need to take to complete the degree.

and also, what a typical schedule for high school would be like.

I really appreciate any input that you can give.

Thank You.

Ken

Dear friend,

We need more inputs from you to give a proper guidance. Engineering is such a vast field and there are many branches and fields. The syllabus , curriculum and type of education vary from college to college and university to university. In a large country like India ( Probably in US also condition may be same)there are hundreds of reputed universities and thousands of engineering colleges .For obtaining a Bachelor of engineering degree a student has to spend minimum four years of study and has to pass all the semester or annual examinations for all the four years.Students will have to complete many projects during these years and have to complete a major project in the finial year and submit a project report the marks of which will be considered for final results and grade. Vacation training at industrial organisations and factories are also arranged even though it is not compulsory.

The standard of the syllabus and method of teaching in Engineering Institutes like IIT (Indian Institute of Technology ) and REC ( Regional Engineering College) are much different from colleges affiliated to regular universities . There are autonomous colleges and deemed universities who have their own standards.

Thank you for your reply Abraham. :) I posed the question that way, because it is such a wide field. I am an Electronic/Computer Engineering student, but this presentation is for a Spanish Class. I am a 42 year old electronic tech, returning to school after a very long time away.

what i am looking for in the way of syllabus is just a variety of what some of our users have done education wise. In particular, the school that i have available to me, has a program that has no leeway to learn other things in the field. it is a religious school, so the extra classes (choose your own) that schools like MIT and University of Illinois allows are not available, because they have a set curriculem. what i want to show is:

- does the schools attended, have a rigid schedule?

- do you have to take classes like philosophy, sociology?

- is a foreign language required to graduate? I am required to have 2 semesters.

- what kind of tuitions and fees are there?

- How does your high school education prepare you for college?

- ie.. does your high school require 4 years of math?

- what type of science classes?

- how do you get accepted into an engineering program?

and i'd like this information from a 1st person perspective. Not as a foreigner (me) coming to your country and attending.

Thank you,

Ken

Do a google using, for example, "syllabus for engineering course in argentina".

Repeat for any other country of your choice. HTH.

i have done the searching, but i'm more interested in a first hand discussion, than something posted by the universities in question.

but thank you,

Ken

then the next thing to do would be to converse with them.

what better source than directly from the horse's mouth? I'm sure they'll be happy to provide you with the information you need.

I am from India I can reply to your questions as under:-

does the schools attended, have a rigid schedule? Yes

- do you have to take classes like philosophy, sociology? No

- is a foreign language required to graduate? I am required to have 2 semesters. No.

- what kind of tuitions and fees are there? I passed out long time back may be around $1,000/- now a days.

- How does your high school education prepare you for college? There are common schools who give reachings in various subjects, but there few techanical school who give teachings in techanical subjects.

- ie.. does your high school require 4 years of math? Yes

- what type of science classes? Science is one of the compulsory subject in high school. It consists of chemistry, biology, zoology etc.

- how do you get accepted into an engineering program? After completing the engineering courses one has to get practical training in industry except IT courses.

I graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia PA with a BSEE. It is a five year program with co-op required school. At the end of the fourth year, our junior year, we met the IEEE requirements for a BSEE. Our senior year we were able to take courses in the major that we chose ourselves. Electrical engineering is so diversified it is almost ready to split apart by itself anyway. Drexel offered major paths for power, micro circuits, computers, bio-med, controls, lasers/optics, signal processing, microwaves, etc. and probably more of them that I have forgot. With these options it was nice to be able to choose.

- does the schools attended, have a rigid schedule Yes until the fifth year

- do you have to take classes like philosophy, sociology. Yea and it sucked because I paid for college myself

- is a foreign language required to graduate? I am required to have 2 semesters.No- what kind of tuitions and fees are there? screaming high

- How does your high school education prepare you for college?I cannot remember

- ie.. does your high school require 4 years of math? yes

- what type of science classes? every thing you can think of if you desire to take them

- how do you get accepted into an engineering program? apply to the school, have good SAT scores,

I'm not an engineer, but I will take a shot at it anyway. Some things are generic. Any engineering school needs to involve the following.

1) Materials Science.

2) Applied Mathematics. (Geometry, Algebra, Statics, Dynamics, etc)

3) Physics & Inorganic Chemistry.

4) Basic Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Electronics, Electrical Power, Basic Machines, Fasteners, etc

5) Basic Instrumentation & PLC's

6) Language, Communications, and Presentations.

7) Ethics and Engineering Law.

8) Project Management (Organizational & Contractual)

9) Project Management (Financial, Cashflow and Budget)

10) Engineering History.

11) Drafting, Documentation & Design.

12) Specification Reading & Preparation.

13) Essential Computer skills.

14) Machining and Fabrication technologies.

15) Basic Reseach Skills.

I have passed Engg approx 26 yrs back from one university and done masters in another.

The answers from the two are

does the schools attended, have a rigid schedule? - First one yes, second no.

- do you have to take classes like philosophy, sociology? First Sociology, second both.

- is a foreign language required to graduate? I am required to have 2 semesters. No

- what kind of tuitions and fees are there? Then it was equivalent to apprx $10/month

- How does your high school education prepare you for college?

- ie.. does your high school require 4 years of math? : Yes

- what type of science classes? : If engg then 2 yrs of science (Ph+Chem combined) + 2 yrs of individual phys and chem, + all 4 yrs of math. No biology. Optional geometrical drawing for all the four years (almost eqiuv to engg drg)

- how do you get accepted into an engineering program? - Admission tests for individual colleges/ group of colleges after passing the 12th grade. Based on your rank you get to choose the stream. In first college the stream are more rigid (credit options from other stream are limited) In the second it was very flexible In fact for my masters only about 24 out of 48 were from main stream, other 24 are your choice.
