New Meson Detected

05/19/2005 2:42 PM

Particle Physicists have been busy smashing stuff again. This time they observed a new meson in electron-positron collisions. The new meson is a hybrid containing a charm quark, a charm antiquark and a gluon, and was predicted theoretically in 1978. Interestingly the mass of the new meson is much smaller than the predicted value.

Don't know much about particle physics?

Subjective

Could the interaction of the quark and anti-quark be causing errors in the mass measurements?

I don't know. Usually if the mass is wrong its either the experimental measurement was wrong or there was another partical or force the theorists hadn't accounted for.

Quarks

I'm betting that pentaquarks really do exist. The lady or gentleman who predicted the discovery of this new meson in 1978 must feel pretty good right now.
