Stainless Steel Spec Cross-Referencing

10/13/2008 1:04 PM

I work for a small shop that machines stainless steel. As we are getting more global business we are finding it difficult with limited exposure to quote so many different steel specs especially when we get into the duplex grades. (We mostly use what here is referred to as 2205 duplex stainless amd 2507 Super Duplex). Is there a free cross reference chart available to be able to compare the different standards uses around the globe?

I am seeing things like these below and need to correlate to US spec's

- A276-13700

- A315-CD4MCu

- A415 - CPF8m

- A276-S31600

- A193B8M

Any help is appreciated.

For the most part, what you have listed are cast stainless steels with their ASTM standards.

Please perform searches on this site for an overview of each particular standard.

http://www.astm.org/Standards/A276.htm

Please see page 10-13 of this handbook for references to some of the more popular stainless steels (particularly in pulp mills)

It is time you talked to your supplier about sizes they can get and prices.

I see that the specifications that you reference are all ASTM specifications. You can download each of the individual standards (A-276, A-415, A-315, A-193) from www.astm.org (for the cost of the standard).

Another, more general reference, if you do get items identified to various international standards are various comparison books:

"Worldwide Guide to Equivalent Irons and Steels" and "Worldwide Guide to Equivalent Nonferrous Metals and Alloys" by ASM - These books have materials listed by country and reference these back to UNS numbers.

"Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System" - ASTM DS-56H or SAE HS-1086 - This book has sequential listing of UNS number with reference to ASTM, SAE, AISC, and a few other standards.

http://engineers.ihs.com/news/astm-world-steel.htm DS67C, The Handbook of Comparative World Steel Standards, 4th Edition.

DS67C gives an explanation of how and why one steel is comparable to another.

This revised edition allows the user to identify comparable steels that are found in standards from around the world and to evaluate each standard to ensure that the selected steel is suited for the intended application.

I have the UNS book and the ASM books, which have been useful, but I don't use them frequently. Has anyone used these?

Lawerence has a very good refernce source in the publications that he furnished,I would like to add we have a product specified in the US and is manufactured in Korea,we all have to be on the same page in regards to the material used. This should be standard stuff when machining metal parts, find out beforehand what standards are being used, should be universal.
