60HZ v/s 50HZ

how to use 60 HZ power supply unit on 50HZ supply. Fequency converter for 40KW seems very prohibitive.

Rather, What will go wron if we connect 60HZ power unit to 50HZ supply?

the unit is rated 40KW/500A/80V/OCV 150 used for plasma spray

What happens if you connect a 60 Hertz motor to a 50 Hertz mains:

The motor turns 17% slower

The internal current goes up by 17%

The power (watt) goes down with 17 %

The mechanical cooling is less, because of 17% less turns

The result is a higher current, then designed by the manufacturer and the insulation of the electrical wiring deteriorate much quicker, which after sometime results in a burn-out.

In that case can I run the equipment at leasser current ( 410 A 17% lesser han rated 500A) and give additinal cooling to the SCR and transformer by keeping power unit in Aircon room. Pl note there is no rotating part in this power transformer except cooling fan.

if u connect a 60hz power unit to 50hz supply it produce serious damage to the machine or equipment. take a bulb in a second it turns on and off for 50 times. that u cant observe with ur naked eye. in 50hz system number of cycles in a second are 50. so the device responds 50 times in second. if the equipment is designed for 50hz it must be operated in this constraint. a 60hz system is powerful compared to 50hz. in swedan they use this sysem to drive trains up the hill

A light bulb would turn on and off 120 times per second at 60 Hz and 100 times per second at 50 Hz.

Oooooh .... I see ... That's why our trains in most parts of Europe (50Hz) go uphill so slow...

In Switzerland 162/3Hz is used to drive trains up hills. Grüzi!

Check with the equipment manufacturer. It is likely that the incoming power is first converted to DC in which case the concern may be very small. It all depends on how "international" the circuit designer was when he created the equipment.
