You can use X-10 technology. It uses a remote control, with a receiver plugged into a wall electrical socket to control various modules also plugged into wall electrical sockets. It sends a signal over the electrical wires to each module. I had a system several years ago that could turn lamps on and off, but I don't know how advanced it has become.

Try AMX Corporation, headquartered in Richardson, Texas. One of the top firms, with advanced systems, worldwide, for mid to high end home and office automations (and other such as theatres, yachts...) using remote controls. Go to amx.com for info.

There are a few options to automate a home, first. the home computer, second, which is my favorite, a plc with configurable ethernet connection to a wireless router, this is similar to the home computer concept, but instead allows the user to interface via human machine interface (HMI)(touchscreen, remote location etc...) the versatility is greater here and frees up the home computer for the rest of the family to enjoy. Also, the HMI can be located anywhere in the house or garage or next to your bed or near the front door etc... you can control it from a laptop anywhere, you could be on your way home and quickly log onto your home plc and automate your desired settings and walk into your home as though you had never left.

You should check out Remote Control Technology. They might have something worth checkin' out if your're looking to automate something.

Good Luck!!

X-10 is the way to go on a budget, but it really depends on what you want to automate.
