Balancing primary variable chiled water flow

10/17/2008 12:40 PM

Primary variable chilled water flow; I wanted to ask is there a procedure or a technical experience of some colleagues regarding on how to balance a primary variable flow in a chilled water system. regards

Geeehh...! Probably there has to be a modulating valve somewhere through the chill water supply tour the air handles. Sometimes if the valve data is still available you may conduct a testing of the opening and closing travel on such valve(s). The thing is to check out if the valve is actually fully functional and in range. The other thing will be a variable speed motorpump in the loop. The air handles coil(s) should be full of flowing water (solution) to be efficience. Water out of the chiller is normally between (45 to 50 deg. F) is operation is good. Anyway few things will need to be checking out good before water temp. and flow is allrigth. Strainers for the pumps both condenser and evaporator have to be free and clean from sludge or dirt to have a good suction and discharge pressures out of them as well, check them out just in case. And install new set of gages around the in-out sides of the pump(s) to have a better clues of the operating pressures and it wont hurt to check out in the same time how clean the cooling tower strainer are as well, just in case. Overall if there are a modulation valve and an variable speed motorpump they will need a fine tune to allow a good flowing volume through the loops in and out. Lock and Tag for safety always.

Allset, have fun with such troubleshooting and it will come to you, nice project!

Crank that Puppy Up,

Ok, you know if there is any info on neccesary and safe minimum and maximun flow rates for chilled water pumping for this kind of systems it will be of great help

Goshhhh... If a huge system are the case sometimes the flow rate across the pumps will be around 20-30 PSI suction and up to 80-90 PSI discharge. Many times there are 3 pumps and normally you may run with only one or two if necesaraly. Hopefully this give you a clue for the flow rates but remember to have a new sets of gauges at the inlet and outlet around the pumps in order to determine how well they are operating other than that will be good to check the running amperages against motor plate info to be on the safe side, just in case.

Allllllset! Hasta la vista my friend and for safety. Lock Out and Tag Out if needs it for protection no matter what. And do not rush to nothing, work safe around such Puppies all the time.

You have the technology,

MC
