insulation efficiency

10/19/2008 4:17 AM

suppose there is a line to which steam is entered in temperature T and pressure P. the lenght of line is L and there are some branches connected to the header. is there any software or method to check the efficiency of insulation in this line. in better expression I want to enter the inlet and outlet temp. and select an insulation type and thickness and ask for efficiency and heat loss.

thanks

Thanks, but I must politely decline registering, I am not sure if you have followed previous threads with my "mystery" answers - but I prefer to remain anonymous.

But, I will leave you my signature smiley

Take an infra red temperature & measure temperature. anywhere between 38c to 42c is a 95% good insulation. Better - just put your palm and if you can stand comfortably, that's a 90% good insulation.

Personal experience: Steam mains upto 15 bar 1/2" to 3" -2" insulation thickness, 32 kg/m3 density & 4" to 12" mains - 4" insulation thickness, 64 kg/m3 density if fibre glass wool blanket 240c.

Now since mostly rockwool with minimum 80 kg/m3 - 2" thickness till 3" main & 4" on 4" main & +.

Thermo oil lines 250c - minimum 100 kg/m3 density 550c.

Above only based on my practical experience. Serves my purpose.

Checkup spec sheets of insulation material & type preferable to you, apply as per desired thickness, density & temperature. Also depends what is locally available.

Another program I just found is located at:

NOTE: I have not downloaded nor tried this program so I can't really vouch for it.

Thanks smiley! I've bookmarked this. I'll buy some of their softwares when I visit USA for they are not that expensive.
