I-Beam

What size i-beam do i need to span 19 feet? It will have a total load of 2500 lb per linear foot. It will be fastened to the foundation on both ends with no supports in between.

I think there has been a lack of response due to a few reasons:

  1. There is likely more information that you are not providing - such as exact service, live loads, dead loads, ...
  2. Is there a specific code that needs to be followed for this?
  3. For such high loads, and the potential for great harm, I suspect people are hesitant to provide you with an answer - I know I am (A little information is a dangerous thing)

You are absolutely right, Guest. We have no idea how this individual intends to use the information he or she obtains from this site. Moreover, it is not an appropriate question for CR4. We should be dealing with methods, theory or the general philosophy of solving a problem rather than getting into the nitty gritty of solving a particular instance of structural design.

If the OP is unable to perform the simple calculations required to determine the answer to this trivial question, then nothing but harm can result from our supplying him with an answer which he will, in all likelihood, misuse. Our purpose is to help people to understand, not to act in the capacity of an unpaid consultant.

By "I" beam - do you mean a W section (wide flange) or an S section?

What is your maximum permissible deflection at mid span?

What is the maximum allowable shear?

Is the load static of dynamic?

What minimum safety factor do you require?
