Windows XP Problem: No Desktop Display, Only Blue Screen.

10/21/2008 5:47 AM

Windows XP on a friend's PC did not display it's Desktop when switched on. The screen display is blue with nothing showing, even the Start Menu was not showing. He was accessing his files and activating software applications through Windows Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del), clicked New Task button, then Browsed or typed in his files names in. I did a virus scan and found, repaired and deleted 275 Trojan viruses.

I assume his XP's Explorer software component must have been corrupted.

What should be done to remedy this problem on my Friend's PC?

Try to re-install the software that been corrupted or re-install the window.

And if you cannot get into Safe Mode, boot to a Knoppix Live CD and get all your important data off to an external drive. With that many infections the system is probably hosed and will need to be reformatted/reinstalled new.

Hello Ron Nombri:

did your friend have any antivirus or anything 'anti' to stop the nasty bugs?

Or was it the same one or two Trojans reproduced?

It is a wonder the machine is working at all!

I would save what is absolutely essential and completely wipe the HHD or Drives, if more than one.

When thinking of saving stuff he/she has collected, it will have to be very important for me to save under those circumstances. You or they, might save something to find it is corrupted anyway?

This extreme case has to be a start from scratch job really. $ or 5 Trojans can do enough damage, let alone 275!.

A completely new set-up will be easier to manage than trying to 'guess' if this or that has been effected in any way.

Actually, I would go so far as to getting a new HDD if the machine is not new anyway?

Good luck! It will be interesting to see if that number of Trojans can be bettered?

Before going into safe mode go into BIOS settings and find the option to setup defaults. Do that and save and close then go into safemode. Some viruses change critical settings in the BIOS which would leave the PC unusable.

I would also download some Rootkit Detection programs and run them to get the bugs out of the registry or those trogans will never really be gone and they will just reinstall themselves.

Ok if there are 275 trojans then there at least that many adware/spywars as well.

1st if you deleted all the trojans. Reboot back to were ever you did this (safe mode?) and scan again. See if anything comes back. (They like to hide in the startup portion of the registry)

Next do a repair install of windows so you don't loose any data

Then once you can boot normally. Download AVG, ADware, and Spybot Search and destroy. Then DISCONNECT from the internet once they are all installed and updated.

SCAN SCAN SCAN! Only hook to the internet to get information on how to remove anything the three programs above can not!

Scan and reboot and scan again. once you can do this twice your pretty safe.

Once you can do all this. I would suggest that you do a online scan Trend Housecall is a good one just to make sure.

Most of the time this stuff leaves your programs and data alone. It will mess with windows but not your data.

Good luck.

PS to make sure your fixed there is a program called Hijackthis. You can run it and then post the log file to one of many forums and smarter people then I will look it over for issues.

Hello bill12780:

good advice given here my friend!

But I recently had 4 Trojans and a lot more adware and viruses because of the Trojans, as you say. However I downloaded cleaning apps and pulled the plug. Then started scanning and rescanning. it took two days.

I honestly cannot see how he/she can scan with any pc tool/s which will find every little bit of every Trojan etc. I just can't.

Never the less, your advice is sound, especially when you say disconnect. Many people do not and get yet more bugs as they try to clean up!
