MATERIAL USED IN MANUFACTURING BEARINGS

10/23/2008 12:09 AM

CAN ANYBODY TELL WHICH MATERIAL IS BEST FOR MANUFACTURING CYLINDRICAL ROLLER BEARING RINGS OF I.D. 240 mm ? WE WOULD LIKE TO ADOPT CASE CARBURISING METHOD FOR HARDRENING WITH HRC 58-60. WHAT SHOULD BE CASE DEPTH ?

GET A MACHINIST HANDBOOK, IT WILL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE DYNAMICS OF BEARINGS AND RINGS.

Where are you?

Look into ASTM 4140 steel. It has the properties you need.

What is thickness of the ring? 4140 that has been suggested will likely through harden, not case harden.

If you have already selected that you want to case harden, then you should already know what case depth you need. What will the hardness of the rollers contacting this ring be?

By the way, there is a heck of a lot more to selecting steel for bearing applications than picking the chemistry. Method of manufacture, inclusion size and type, etc. etc.

more details please.

Thanks a lot. Thickness of the ring is 70 mm ( id. 240 & od 310 )

8620 may be a better material than 4140, it will case harden, case depth is an engineering issue, but if it's not over .030" the Rockwell "C" test may not be valid
