DIY - Lamborghini Countach

10/23/2008 11:12 AM

Ok I can understand the drive to build your own kit car, but to build one in your basement from scratch??? That takes some commitment.

Wow, that's some project...
I hope Lambo's lawyers don't see this.
It's gotta be a breach of copyright . but seriously...would that only be the case if he sells it?

I wonder if his 'honey' forgiven him spending so much time in the basement? That was more than a life sentence down there.

Maybe she will if she's allowed to drive it

First, he has to get her out of the building, I mean the car.

Holy cow!!! In pictures that looks very close to the real thing. The only part that jumps out as wrong is the angle at the top of the front wheel wells. They should have a very subtle rake and appear almost parallel to the ground.

At any rate, looks much better than any kit car. He should open tooling to mass produce in a kit form. I'm jealous!

A serious question. How would you go about knocking one off without a real one to take proportions from?

A serious question.

In the article it says he took measurements from a real one, dunno where or how..maybe his neigbour has one, or he hangs out outside expensive joints at night.

OR...

You go forward in time using the KrisDelTM time machine, you take measurements from the finished car then go back and build it...simple ... hmmm

Why not just take the finished car back in time with you? Then it would already be built.

...but this guy really gives me motivation to start hammering some alloy.

I see how he did it now. His accurate body mold was the plywood body buck seen in the pictures. He must have taken many paper templates from a real car and used them to form the mold. Of course there is still some interpretation due to the 12" or so between sheets of plywood.

I hope he took the sheetmetal out of his basement or to a shop for paint! As not to kill off his family.

Whoa, Nelly! Not counting 10 yrs worth of labor costs (since "hobby" hrs are not "billable" hours) I wonder what the dollar investment was? Had to be cheaper than buying one I would think?

I don't think he will have any liability issue with Lamborghini as long as he doesn't sell it as a Lamborghini.

I mean look at the PR for Lamborghini, someone spent a major part of their life to make a fairly accurate copy of a Countach. Lamborghini should look at whether this guy should be working for them with that type of dedication. Hell of a resume. Bet he can tell you what is different and why.

I don't see "sell it" as being part of his vocabulary - it would probably be the equivalent of giving birth to a child, spending 10 years raising it, and then someone else takes over - not hardly!

I was in love with the Countach for a long time when I saw a picture of it. Later when I bought a 1:35 model, I examined it and concluded that it wasn't designed well enough. For one thing, rear view is almost totally absent with the thing! Still, it's a beautiful looking car.

However, that guy spent 10 years building it which shows how much he loved it (maybe more than his wife ).

So, now he's spent God knows how much on building it and he's got it out in the sunshine. With a V8 engine, he's going to be spending more to keep the love of his life humming along for the coming years.
