Dear sir There is a paraallel in sizing the copper bus bars with that of cable sizing. Both are similar. 1)Current carrying capacity.(load current) 2)Heat dissipation. 3)mutual inductance effects (interleaving of bus bars(for higher currents)). I have heard of Thomas Rata method for bus bar size calculations. regards Ravipra01

You raise a complex question.

*Bus Bars are generally sized to limit heating at rated
load to an acceptible level under prevailing conditions.

*Mechanical strength to resist magnetic stress under
available short circuit conditions are a factor.

*Sometimes 'current limiting` orientations are selected.

Safety margins are applied, some are mandated, others discretionary.
Limits depend on the appplication.
