good material for oil absorbtion?

10/25/2008 2:40 PM

is there a specific type of oil absorbing material that would absorb oil/grease and would hold it and be resistant to water washing or rinseing it out but at the same time have the ability to cleansed of the captive oil/grease by some chemical or suction process. this material has to be extremely durable. Hello Rolf,

I spent quite a few years on boats in the North Pacific. We had every possible means for oil spill clean up and prevention that we could afford the space for. All the pads, pillows and booms we used(up to 5 years ago) were completely disposable.

I have gone elsewhere and have seen a couple different means of handling the mix. Chambered separators with a mechanical disc that is dipped and scraped--The others were evaporators.

I just looked around on the web and found, pretty much the old stand by materials. What is it that you have and need to clean or recover?

If you can classify the liquid down, a centrifuge may help you the rest of the way.

Chamois leather is highly effective at separating water from oil.

Herstad,

What are you trying to do? I'm not sure if the oil absorbtion material described will cut it. Can you provide more information?

In the fleet, I worked with oil containment kits that consisted of oil absorbtion pads, and containment booms. If it was a large spill, there would be a skimmer on scene to skim the surface of the water to remove the oil. The pads we use are disposable and like tissue paper sponges, oil can be rinsed out of them and if you are not careful, you can tear them easily. In the past, there was a chemical that the navy used to clump oil and cause it to sink to rid of surface contaminates, but that was not environmentally safe/friendly so it has been banned I believe everywhere. The only way to reclaim the spill is by using a vaccum (properly outfitted to prevent fumes and explosions) but the reclaimed oil will have to settle and filtered before reuse.

Once again, depends on what you are trying to do and where you are trying to do it.

Try contacting the New Pig Corp. at < newpig.com > or at 1.800.HOT.HOGS I have no affiliation with them other than satisfactory use of their products for many years.
