convert sun light to a laser beam and to excitate

Hi-I read that Japanese scientists developed some device that converts sun light to a laser beam.

Their vision is to have this device hovering in orbit high enough to have sun light al the time,and the laser beam should be transmited to earth to use its energy in few ways.

My question:

Is it possible the the laser's energy will excitate atoms,so that the electrons will be free and attracted to an anode that is conected to a positive magnet pole,and this will begin electric current?

This requires that the electrons will [after doing some work!]return to the atoms that will be deficient for an electron.
