Cola for fires

11/02/2008 10:52 AM

I was reading an article yesterday about Mentos mints causing a foaming effect in Cola, through a process of Nucleation, and it occurred to me, I don't know why, that Cola would probably be an effective fire fighing liquid, if sprayed on a fire in massive quantities.

First, the atomization of the spray would increase the nucleation by increasing the surface area of the liquid, and then the fire would also increase the the nucleation by heating the droplets. The fire subduing effect would be from CO2 interfering with the combustion process, and, I believe, the enhanced cooling effect from Nucleation. If the cola were to have some additives put in that enhance the foaming effect, or liquids use, even tonic water.. what new kinds of fire fighting liquids could could be created?

I think chilled and pressurized fire trucks of cola would be effective.. don't you?

Aside from being unnecessarily costly, you're also going to have every teenager on the planet out to skin you alive for using up all the cola on Earth.

I have heard of it being used as an extinguisher in a car. Shake the can, open and point the spray at the fire.

While it works on a small scale, the sugary residue is a problem. It's also an expensive way to fight fires.

Phosphoric acid content would be corrosive to many materials.

On the other hand, you can drink the surplus after you've put out the fire (assuming you have no respect for your stomach).
