Using 60-Hz Rectiformers at 50 Hz

In our existing Chlore-Alkali plant ,we want to use one exsiting rectiformer unit ( available second hand ) with 90 KA / 110 V DC rectifier unit with its transformer incoming voltage rated at 20 Kv/60 Hz to our plant where our power supply frequency is 50Hz. Whether we can use 60 Hz transformer at 50 Hz ? What will happen ?

If the transformer is used only for rectifying AC voltage to DC voltage there should not be any problem with using the 60Hz transformer on a 50Hz supply

When a 60Hz transformer is used at 50Hz, the core flux density and magnetization current increase. This causes a rise in core and winding loss and the unit runs hotter. If the original design was robust, the increase in operating temperature can be acceptable. However, in some cases running a 60Hz transformer at 50Hz can result in significant overheating and failure. Suggest you initially monitor the temperature to determine if this will be a reliable solution for your plant.

In theory there is no problem in using 60Hz transformer on a 50Hz system but it depend upon the load. If the load is small then there will no performance difference. But if it used for a big load then there will be a problem in the performace of the equipment. The transformer will become overheated and the equipment used will also be deteriorated with the passage of time.

As a general guide when using a transformer rated at 60Hz on 50 Hz, reduce the voltage rating to 5/6 (83%) of the original. This will give the same core losses. Any higher voltage risks overheating. Are there any other taps on the primary you can use to adjust the voltage?

Large transformers are very expensive. If the transformer has been built for 60Hz, it is very unlikely it has been made 20% oversize to allow for 50Hz operation as well.

It seems to me more convincing answer as I think this will avoid over fluxing just similar to Turbo_Generator unit Transformers where the excitation with interlock is switched on only when the speed reaches 90%.
