Electrical Distribution and Power System Construction

10/27/2008 2:57 AM

1.In standard practice,is it possible to install rated 50 hz inductive loads in a rated 60 hz power supply or vise versa?

2. Does it affects the performance of the equipments and the power supply?

Hello kylyn

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

It is not generally regarded as advisable to cross-install electrical equipment, because performance will suffer, along with longevity of the equipment.

There is another reason: 50Hz and 60Hz equipment generally have different voltage supply requirements.

Kind Regards....

Yes provided voltage and power rating are same.

Definitely.A 50Hz inductor will have a higher reactance and there higher impedance when installed in a 60HZ circuit and vice versa.Performance there fore suffers

what you should be aware of is that inductive equipment rated for 60Hz will have a lower reactance at 50Hz and so will draw more current at that frequency. This often leads to overheating and earlier failure. In the case of motors this problem is exacerbated by the fact that the motor and therefore it's cooling fan also will be running slower and thus providing less cooling.

XL= 2.∏.f.L

if f= 50 Hz, XL = 2.∏.50.L = 100.∏.L

f= 60 Hz, XL = 2.∏.60.L = 120.∏.L

in motor, if XL become higher , then current become higher too.

P = I².Z.cos Φ

P = I².(R+jXL).cos Φ

Z is impedance per phase---> so if XL increase, it cause P increase too

Dera Friend,

You can operate the 50 hz m/c on 60 hz system, provided m/c is not over loaded.

the effects are -when 50 hz m/c connected to 60 hz system, magnetic saturation may take & magnetic losses increases, over heating the equipment. So, you may have to reduce the operating load. Further, with 60hz, speed of m/c shall increase by 20% and your drive should have speed controller to match with your geared system.

On connecting 60hz m/c on 50 hz system, m/c shall work with 20% lower speed, & lower torque. Further, Voltage need to be reduced propertionately to keep v/f ratio constant, to maintain torque. The system shall be more efficient. for this, vfd drives are available.

If 50hz transformer is connected to 60 hz system, equipment will be over heated. but 60hz transformer shall work cool on 50 hz system.

regards.
