In general, it is the opposite of a conductor.

That is, it keeps you from becoming part of the circuit in an electrical system by preventing the energy from leaking into other conductors.

In a heating system, it keeps the heat from leaking out (or in).

Check a dictionary for other meanings. Context is the clue as to which definition is correct.

Insulation is the noun form of the word "insulate". The meaning given in readers dictionary, and I quote "Separate from everything around ;cover(wire)with material which will not allow electricity to pass away ". If you have any interest in electrical engineering you would have learned it in sixth standard ( in India) Your intension of putting this tag for discussion is not understood

It is an important subject in electrical Engineering as with out insulation you cannot conduct electricity.Hence lot of research is conducted to develop good insulting material too use with various electrical products .

Thermal Insulation material is another important chapter for which lot f research is conducted to develop suitable thermal insulatig materiial. The subject is too vast to discuss here.

A material that is highly resistant to the flow of electrons by thermal or electric potential.

plastics, epoxy resins, ceramics are good examples of electrical insulators, and glass-wool, asbestos etc are good examples of thermal insulators.

insulation is material which never allows passage of current through it.

for cables we use PVC or XLPE for insulation.
