Note that there are different kinds of UPS. AC UPS systems, DC UPS systems.

Essentially all of them have a battery backup unit which is able to maintain the power supply to the load in case of failure of the main power.

Then there are redundant systems, parallel redundant systems, systems with bypass, etc.

The answer can be more specific if you give details.
