how to check capacitor bank condition

we have 430kvar capacitor panel(total 8 bank,eatch bank 86.6amp,60kvar),mature the current following--

capacitor bank no-01 -R PHES 28AMP, Y PHESE36AMP,B PHESE 45AMP,

,CAPACITOR BANK 02- R phase 42amp, Yphase70amp,Bphase42amp,

tranformer-1500kva

load-800amp

pf-0.9 r,y,b

pls give me good anwer-this capacitor bank good condition or---------

The way we used to check large capacitor banks in our transmitter unit, was to time its discharge cycle through a large wire wound resistor of known resistance. This would give us the RC time constant and thus its capacitance.

By rule of thumb current measurement(to the capacitor) is a good indication of the condition of the capacitors ,IF all the phases have the same inductive load than the current flow will be the same.

reliable way is to use a capacitor meter to measure tha capacitance of each of the capacitor, the reading should be withine +/- 10% of the name plate.

But if your PF is being maintained by the Caps ,you only need to regularly take the current readings and record in a log book, this will give you a good history to refer when in doubt.
