Metric gears

11/02/2008 4:57 AM

Hello, does anybody know where I can find software to draw metric gears, I have searched and could find only imperial software.

I need to save it as a dxf file so that it can be used on wire erosion or laser cutting machine.

I am using Autocad 2000.

How about drawing it using imperial dimensions then rescaling to the required metric size. This is what I normally do when encountering objects drawn in the wrong measuring system. I often have to switch from metric products to imperial products that are almost identical except for mounting hardware locations etc. And of course the overall size vary a bit as well. In such cases RESCALING works for me.

Admittedly if you then use DWF to publish you must manually add critical dimensions as a seperate layer. To do that I explode the dimension then edit the numbers to corespond to the size I want.

Hello murphyc1:

These are the sites which I got searching for the term:

metric gears software drawing tool"

There is lots. You know what you want so it may be better for you to look at a few to check?

This is based on advice I gave about gears a few months ago. Though they were ready made ones.

The site I copied and pasted looks promising but I am not sure if the software is metric.

Good luck anyway. I will be looking in to see what you find.

(The site and software below came up on the same search for 'metric' gears. Though I am not sure the software can draw metric.) It may be that Microsoft has an add-on to convert a drawing program to metric? The search term I used was

I've used MITCalc. It does the strength calculations and draws the gear set. Free trial version, reqasonable for 1 yr. license.

Try this online gear creator it saves as .plt file which can be converted to dxf using

hpgl2dxf.exe also a free download.

http://woodgears.ca/gear_cutting/template.html

This is suitable for laser work for wooden, acrylic gears possibly other materials

This is not an inexpensive solution but you could upgrade to Autodesk Inventor, the 3D parametric system. It has built in design accelerator functions, like gears, and also much more, like chain and gear, belt and pulley, frames(racks), etc.
